If the video above does not run smoothly, this one:
In August 2013 while on his morning walk, the rationalist crusader Narendra Dabholkar was gunned down by men on motorcycles. In February 2015, the popular CPI mass leader, Comrade Govind Pansare, was shot dead in an eerily identical manner. Both had been threatened by Hindu fundamentalists. In both cases no arrests have been made. This song commemorates those who, through history, put their lives on the line in the fight against irrationality and religious bigotry. It was composed by Sachin Mali who is in jail awaiting trial under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). It is sung by his partner Sheetal Sathe who faces the same charges. Sheetal Sathe, Sachin Mali, Sagar Gorkhe and Ramesh Gaichor from the Dalit and working class cultural troupe, the Kabir Kala Manch, were all accused of being in contact with Naxalites. After initially going into hiding, two years ago they courted arrest in public by singing in full view of the police. They distributed leaflets stating that they were testing their Constutional right to the Freedom of Expression. Sheetal was eventually granted bail but the three others are still in jail awaiting trial. None of them are charged with any violent crime.
